Carl Friedrich August Pieper /
Albertine Friederika Wilhelmine Brehmer

carl_tina.jpg (11241 bytes)Carl Friedrich August Pieper was born on 6 April 1846.  Neither his birth nor his baptismal record has been found, but he very likely was born in the southern area of Kreis Regenwalde in Pommern.  His parents, Christian Friedrich Wilhelm and Wilhelmine Dorothea (Buss) Pieper were living in the village of Dübzow, Kreis Regenwalde, prior to coming to the United States in 1857.  He had siblings born in Dübzow in 1852 and 1854, but the parents must have lived in another village prior to 1852 since Carl's and his sister, Henrietta's birth or baptismal records were not found there.

Carl was 11 years old when his parents migrated to the Town of Lebanon, Dodge County, Wisconsin.  The passenger ship listing of the family follows: "The workman, Wilhelm Pieper, 38 years, his wife, Dorothea, 34 years, and children: Carl, 11 years, Henriette, 9 years, Johan, 4 years, and Ludwig 2 years, Homeplace, Dübzow, Pommern emigrated on 31 March 1857, from Hamburg with the ship "Eustace" to Quebec, Canada."

The 1860 census indicates the Pieper family was living with Constantine Kropplin.  Mr. Kropplin may have paid the expenses for the family to come to this country in return for their services on his farm.

Carl enlisted in the army on 10 March 1865, using the name of Charles Pieper. His enlistment papers describe him as 19 years old,  5'11" tall, brown eyes, brown hair and dark complexioned.   He volunteered for service in the village  of Hustisford and was mustered into Company B of the 52nd Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry at Fond du Lac.  The enlistment papers indicate he was paid $33.33, and that $66.67 was still due him. Carl was sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he was trained to be a Medic.  He was discharged on 28 September 1865 at the end of the war.

Carl married Albertine Friederike Wilhelmine Brehmer on 16 March 1869 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lebanon, Wisconsin.  The church records indicate that Carl's sister, Henriette Caroline Wilhelmine Pieper was married on the same day to Desiderious Schmiedicke.  According to legend, Carl said that they were married at a Lenten Service at the church.

It was only about ten months after Tina's arrival in the America that she married Carl Pieper. Carl reported that it was love at first sight and that Tina was a very good dancer.  They purchased 40 acres in the town of Lebanon, Dodge County, near Carl's parents' farm.  According to the 1870 census, Tina's father, Carl Brehmer, lived with them he died in 1880.

Albertine, usually called Tina, was born 7 December 1843 in Gross Raddow, Kreis Regenwalde, Pommern.  She was the youngest of six daughters born to Carl Heinrich and Hanna Charlotte Henriette (Schmidt) Brehmer  Carl, Albertine and her sister Emilie migrated to the America    They sailed from Bremen aboard the Bark Geestemuende on 14 April 1868 and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on 9 June 1868. Apparently, they went directly to Dodge Count; Three of Albertan's sisters and her mother had died prior to their trip to America.

In 1900, Carl  learned that there was cheap land for sale in Clark County.  Therefore, Carl and his son, August, plus August's father-in-law, made the hundred mile trip to appraise the land.  He bought several parcels, one of which he turned over to August, one parcel to his daughter, Tina, persuaded Frank to take one,  and moved onto one parcel himself.  His sons Carl Jr. and Robert did not want to move from the area and the left over parcel was later turned over to his daughter, Lena.  There was no Social Security at this time, but income from the mortgages given to his children provided him with income for his retirement.

Carl and Tina farmed their new Clark County farm until Carl was able to obtain a pension for his Civil War service and they then moved to a small house in the village of Loyal   During their declining year, because of their health problems, they were cared for by their daughter, Tina, in her home.  Tina died on 15 April 1930 and Carl died on11 July 1930.  They were buried in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery located a mile north of Loyal on County Highway K.
